Chiefs brace for Reds showdown in Brisbane

Chiefs brace for Reds showdown in Brisbane

All BlacksMarch 8, 2024

Any trip to play the Reds at Suncorp Stadium has its challenges, and the Chiefs are under no illusions ahead of their DHL Super Rugby Pacific game on Saturday.

Coach Clayton McMillan said, "The Reds are a formidable opponent and have been impressive through the early rounds.

"They play an abrasive style and have the athletes to challenge through the middle of the park and their tactical kicking game.

"We are under no illusion how tough this game will be and are preparing for a real dogfight."

Adding to their awareness is their 23-25 loss to the Reds last year in New Plymouth, although, in a playoff rematch, the Chiefs won 29-20.

Reds coach Les Kiss said the team's win in New Plymouth was one of its best performances in 2023. Having played the Chiefs twice in New Zealand, the Reds were looking forward to meeting them on home turf in Brisbane.

The game should see former 118-game Hurricanes prop Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, 33, who also played for the All Blacks and Samoa, make his Super Rugby Pacific debut for the Reds from the bench.

The Chiefs have named a strong team based on the expectation of the Reds' challenge.

All Blacks Aidan Ross and Samisoni Taukei'aho return to the front row, while Tupou Vaa'i and Naitoa Ah Kuoi will be paired at lock.

In the loose, Simon Parker has been given a start at openside flanker alongside Samipeni Finau, with Luke Jacobson captaining again from No8.

Cortez Ratima will start as halfback, with Daniel Rona and Rameka Pohipi in the midfield. Josh Ioane will play fullback, with Shaune Stevenson and Etene Nanai-Seturo on the wing.
