Springboks hail success of pre-season camp

All BlacksMarch 11, 2024

Springboks Head Coach Rassie Erasmus said his side's first pre-season camp was a success ahead of an 11-Test programme in 2014.

Two more camps will be held in May ahead of the opening Test of the season against Wales on June 22 at Twickenham.

Fresh from being awarded an honorary doctorate by North-West University, Erasmus said the camp was an 'alignment' camp where new players and coaches had their first contact.

Former All Black Tony Brown was among the group in attendance.

Erasmus said, "The keys of the alignment camps are to ensure that the players are on the same page in terms of standards required to perform at the top international level and to expose them to our way of doing things. And we are pleased to have achieved that in the last few days.

"The camp was invaluable both in terms of developing our structures for the next few seasons, and in getting the coaches and player to know one another better off the field, especially with the introduction of Jerry [Flannery], Tony [Brown] and Jaco [Peyper] to our coach staff."

The coaches and Peyper, appointed national laws advisor to the side, presented a broad outline to the players and worked in split sessions between the forwards and backs.

"We also presented the Springbok macro plan for the year. We are happy with the foundation laid with a little over four months before we kick off the international season."

The Springboks will face Ireland in Tests in Pretoria and Durban in July and against the All Blacks at Johannesburg on August 31 and Cape Town on September 7. They are also hosting a Test against Portugal in Bloemfontein on July 20.
