2015

It was a tale of two seasons …
A patchy start gave way to a tough run of losses before a tremendous fightback that saw J2 Maroon go unbeaten over the last third of the season, playing with courage, skill and real resilience.

Away wins at Massey, Helensville and Glenfield at the start of the season demonstrated the team’s ability to perform well even when behind on the scoreboard. But we couldn’t win at home – and for a while, the J2 Marooners couldn’t win at all as injuries reduced player numbers resulting in a five-game losing streak leading into the July school holidays.

On the other side of the holiday break, it was a different story. A great win at Kumeu in the “storm of 2015” started the turn-around. The following week saw the first win at Harvey Wright (in week 12). The team was now on a roll mixing great defence with running rugby to win five games in a row, all in impressive style.

It was a great lesson for the coaches and players in determination, a commitment to play for each other and the desire to encourage every player to have a go and not leave it for a few players to carry the load. This was highlighted by the numbers of players who crossed the try-line this season and the great improvement shown by every player on the team. It has been a pleasure to coach and manage the J2 Maroons this season and encouraging to see a group of boys and girls work hard, learn and improve even when the going was tough. J2 Maroon started the year as 18 individuals and finished the year, “a Team.”
