It’s a new-look lineup for our u21 Colts this season. The coaching team of Glenn Newman, Dale Marsters and Jacob Corbett brings a huge amount of experience and Cote passion to the team, supported by managers John Gorst and Mina Wharepouri.
Last Saturday saw the 21s lads visit Massey to play their top side, the Magnum Filters Colts. This team is last years 21s champions and in the first round Cote had a narrow loss.
The game started badly with the Cote putting the kick off out on the full and its safe to say it was a day where Massey fed off our mistakes. From a smart kick in goal where the ball was forced to give a drop out resulted in a well taken try to Massey. The first Cote mistake they took advantage of.
On our first visit to the Massey 22, Cote pressured their lineout and skipper Ephraim “Sam” Tuitupou scored this was unconverted for 5 all. A misread of a kick chase then saw Massey score off another Cote mistake. They then scored another converted try from a misread in the defensive line and some poor defence. Our second visit to the Massey 22 resulted in a well taken try by prop Richard Faleono. Massey then capitalised off another poor defensive effort and scored again.
Our third visit into the 22 was rewarded again when centre Levi Gwynne-Tuatahi scored off a great little grubber through from 1st 5 Xaviar Tenboom. This was converted, and we went into the half 28-17 down.
The ping pong match then ensued in he second half and with every Massey score the Cote would then answer and Cote showed again how lethal they can be when in the 22 with a Michael Jordan back flick from Sam to Micah Rogo to grab a try which has converted by our Pommy-man Jack Stead. Finn Sanileva then crossed after some great interplay and Jack again converted. Unfortunately, each time we scored, Massey scored, and they maintained their 10-point buffer. The last try for Cote, which secured a 5-try bonus point, came from a bullet pass from stand-in 9 Ashton Muller that cut out two Cote players and found Micah on the wing, who finished the game with a double.
Some big plays and the Cote men certainly showed how much their attack has improved and now its time to make the defensive end just as robust. Player of the Day was Ephraim Tuitupou who was into everything and led from the front. He was well supported by Josh Pasina at blindside and Xaviar Tenboom directed play at 10 superbly. The team is looking to push hard for a top 4 finish and will need to improve its defense in the coming weeks.
