2017

J3 Black came together at the beginning of the season with 14 players, scrambling to make up a team.  Coaches, Henry Tofilau and George Harder were pulled on board by manager Natalie Tofilau, (who was coaxed into managing by Maria Niven-Wharepouri!).  We were very lucky to have another 5 players found by Traci Sietu, join us over the coming weeks - some completely new to rugby and start our season with a win over Silverdale. Uncertain of how our new team was going to go during the season, the management were amazed at the immense amount of natural talent, focus and determination we had amongst our kids.

Our team, with the support of great families, went from strength to strength with some huge wins over competitive rivals (Silverdale – 71-13, Marist – 68-14), a few losses, but most of all some great development of skills in our young players and solid friendships formed.

Our kids were easy to train with natural talent on tap, which reflected in our one training session a week. Each week we had players turning up, each wanting to make the most of their opportunity on the field and off, and being there to support even if they were injured or unwell.

We were fortunate to have Isaac Driver, J1 Coach, support us throughout the season, taking training sessions when Henry was unavailable.  The kids really appreciated and valued Isaac’s experience and insight.

The great highlight for management was not only seeing the kids grow in their rugby and life skills throughout the season but also the fantastic support of their parents in managing and running the team. Thanks, J3 Black families!

Henry, George and Nat have really enjoyed the season and look forward to 2018!  LTC!!
