2020

With so much uncertainty around the season even kicking off and having lost a large number from last years side as they moved on to college, we were making up numbers to field a team right up until kickoff of the first game! The number of reserves for any game was usually only one or two, and at times we fielded only 15 players on the day.

Our pack were powerful when going forward, and our backline was beginning to click when the season was halted. With many specialist positions left vacant, we had to ‘manufacture’ players to fill them, and a few deserve special mention. Jeremiah stepped into the void at 10 (and led by example), and never stopped trying to inspire.

Te Wharekokowai, usually hooker, was amazing over the tackled ball wearing number 7. Logan shifted from the forwards to the unfamiliar fullback role and improved as he gained experience. Our players deserve a huge amount of credit for their perseverance during such a difficult 2020 season. A couple of results we’d rather forget, but the growth over time was awesome. That’s in no small part due to the contributions of Isaac and Shona Driver, and also Robbo.

Without a son or daughter in the team, they stepped up to help these kids and our club. I know I speak on behalf of players, parents and the club when I say their efforts are greatly appreciated!

To those returning in 2021 - we look forward to seeing you back. And to those moving on to college – thank you, good luck, and we can’t wait to see you return as senior grade players in the coming years.
