With 10 returning players, the boys welcomed 5 new members to the team, making it our largest squad yet. We also saw a new coach join the ranks, Donald Hendry.
The team hit the ground running, with trainings kicking off earlier in the season and twice a week. There was a huge focus on fitness, technical skills and discipline. I’m sure the boys would all agree their least favourite thing was running diamonds, but it definitely helped improve their fitness throughout the year.
As a result, the team showed great improvement on the previous year which was reflected in their results. They learnt how to work as a team on the field. There was a huge improvement in protecting rucks and retaining the ball. Even when the score wasn’t going our way, they played their hearts out and gave it their all until the whistle blew for full-time.
This year saw the players finding their roles within the backs and forwards with everyone developing a much better understanding of their position within the team.
The majority of the team will be heading down to Taupo in September for the NZ Rugby Festival, which they are super excited for and is a great way to end the season.
Special thanks to all our families and supporters who helped to make this a great season. Without you, we wouldn’t have a team. Thanks to our players for giving it your all and displaying such a high level of sportsmanship. Lastly, thanks to Tom for stepping up to ref this year.
Can’t wait to see the players return for 2024!
Go the Cote!
