Jordie Barrett Shines as Leinster Survive La Rochelle Challenge

All BlacksJanuary 13, 2025

All Black Jordie Barrett's Leinster experience endured another test as they held out the fast-finishing home side La Rochelle for a 16-14 Champions Cup win on Sunday.

Both teams missed kicks in the game's final stages, including a penalty goal attempt by Barrett, who started at fullback before the win was sealed.

The Irish Independent said of Barrett, "The complete player, he barely put a foot wrong the whole game and looked far more comfortable at fullback than on his last outing."

Leinster's defence proved the difference and has set the side up to win their pool should they beat Bath in Dublin at the weekend. A win would give them a home advantage for the competition's knockout stages.

Leinster coach Leo Cullen said his side's first-half play and lead gave them a buffer during a second-half of errors for both teams.

"Taking our chances in the first half is probably the thing, and building a bit of a lead and then weathering that initial early storm.

"We had some chances in terms of a bit of game management, a few kicks that we missed, but it was the same for both teams.

"It was a proper good cup rugby feel about it. It's a pool game but has that sense of a knockout game.

"We'll just try and turn our attention because it'll be Bath in the Aviva [Stadium] in six days' time. Hopefully we'll get a big crowd. Bath are riding high. They are top of the Premiership and will be another great challenge for us."
