Coin Rugby makes a comeback on NZR+

If you grew up in New Zealand in the '80s, '90s or early 2000s, chances are you played coin rugby across a school desk.

It was fast. It was fierce. And it was taken very seriously. Now, Jordan Vaha'akolo from the Morning Shift is bringing the game back—with a twist.

In this fun new video, Jordan dubs himself the captain of the “Coin Blacks” and challenges Black Ferns stars Mererangi Paul, Sylvia Brunt, and Liana Mikaele-Tu’u to the ultimate coin rugby face-off. What starts as a light-hearted battle quickly turns into a surprisingly intense match full of laughs, banter, and sharp flicks of the wrist.

Between plays, the crew shares behind-the-scenes stories—from meeting King Charles to World Cup memories and pre-game rituals. It’s a throwback with a modern twist, where we get to know some of New Zealand rugby’s brightest stars in a way we’ve never seen before.
