The National Cup is a tournament run by New Zealand Rugby which invites clubs to enter weight-restricted teams into a knock-out competition that ends with a final, which this year is the curtain raiser to the All Blacks Australia test on Sept 28 in Wellington. This year was the first time Northcote had entered, and with buy-in from players across all senior teams, we were able to put together a competitive team for round 1.

Our first game was going to be tough, drawing Pakuranga, who was fresh off securing the Auckland U85 title the weekend before. Daring to dream, the team was up for the challenge, and after a short window to get together, they were ready for Pakuranga.

And they did not disappoint, in what was a physical and entertaining game Pakarunga ended up deserved winners 50-26. That said, Northcote were able to score 2 good tries to Tyler Thompson and Gabe Wharepouri, with Gus Mowat adding 4 penalties and 2 conversions. Gus directed play expertly from the first five while up front, Scott Walkington and his front five lead by example, lifting for the game. Travis Gower had a great game at 1/2 back, constantly challenging around the ruck, while Dobbie, Mainey and Trent were constant threats in the loose.

Thanks must go to Craisy and Pres who reunited to lead this club team in the national cup, Adam and Seyb’s who suggested and supported the concept, and to the players from all the senior teams that came together to give this competition a go.

Looking forward to going again in 2025.
