1984 write-up of Bill
Bili joined Northcote Rugby Club in 1965 | and played regularly
for the Seniors for fourteen years. In his earlier days, Bill was a good utility forward occupying positions as No. 8, side
row, prop and latterly, at 1ock. Prior to joining Northcote,
Bill represented Bay of Plenty Juniors 1960-65, Galatea
Representative 1950-65, Rotorua Representative 1960-65. Also
represented the North lsland at Softball 1962-66. While with
Northcote, BiIl represented Auckland Senior B, 1967,68,69; Auckland Maoris 1969-75. Bill was always reliable and a good long-distance goal kicker with a classical action.
BiIl turned to coaching in the late '70s and coached the 1980 5th Grade to win the A.R.U. Championship. As with many coaches, Bil-1 formed an association with his players and took them through to the 4th and 3rd Grades. In 198I with Peter D:-ck and John Willdermoth as managers, Bill coached the 4th Grade, followed by the 3rd Grade for two years in 1982-83. All three years, Bills teams have reached the Championship round.
Bills rugby philosophy revolves around simplicity and practising the fundamentals. His approach is very direct. Ask any player that has played for him.
