Terry Wright
COTE SINCE
1970
All Black representative
NZ Sevens representative
Auckland representative

A fantastic winger who moved over to the Auckland competition and became an All Black. But before he did he won the highest points scorer in the club with 196 points while playing in the 3rd grade.

Top points scorer in the 1983 Taupiri Sevens and so close to being selected for the NZ Hong Kong sevens squad.

Terence John "Terry" Wright. A wing and fullback, Wright represented Auckland at a provincial level, and was a member of the All Blacks, from 1986 to 1992. He played 64 matches for the All Blacks including 30 internationals. He was a member of the victorious New Zealand squad at the 1987 Rugby World Cup. Wright was known for his slim physique during his playing career.

Terry played for the Northcote Birkenhead club for 14 years. His first game for Northcote was as a seven-year-old in the 16th grade in 1970.

Proudly supported by his father Harvey, Terry advanced through the junior grades, becoming an Auckland 11th grade representative in 1977, before attending Northcote College.

There he captained the First XV, toured Queensland on a college sports trip and became the school's senior athletics champion.

In rapid succession, he went from Auckland under-18 rep to third grade rep to Auckland C and B rep before breaking into John Hart's crack NPC team in 1984.

Benefiting from John Kirwan's misfortune (JK requiring shoulder surgery after being injured during the All Blacks' tour of Australia), Terry was an instant success at first-class level. He scored a remarkable 19 tries that first season, a new Auckland record.

Sadly, that was the only year he represented Auckland from the Northcote club. With the emergence of North Harbour as a fully-fledged union in 1985 and starting life in the NPC third division, Terry chose to play his rugby with Auckland, joining the Marist club.

Over the years Terry had devoted many hours of his leisure time practicing his goalkicking. As a consequence, he had developed the ability to kick with either foot and was rewarded in his debut game for Auckland, scoring two tries and kicking five conversions and three penalty goals. His haul of 27 points was a record for a player on first-class debut.

His blistering speed enabled him to score 48 tries for the All Blacks and a record I 12 tries for Auckland, which included 53 tries in Ranfurly Shield matches from just 52 outings.

He was also a New Zealand sevens representative for seven years from 1986.
